Hi it’s Sue @dogsinstitches_and_me on Instagram feeling fabulously festive in sumptuous stretch velvet!
How about sewing up a quick and simple dress to take you through the season in this gorgeous, luxurious fabric?
I decided to make The Women’s Issie Pattern by SewPony which I have made before as it is such an easy make and with the shoulder ruffles always makes me feel special.
The Issie Pattern is designed for knit fabrics and there are so many options to decide to make including tops, a dress with a tie collar or yoke ruffle and cinched in waist and a straight dress with shoulder ruffles. There are so many ruffle options (who doesn’t love a ruffle!) and variations to inspire your creativity.
I decided to make the dress option with shoulder ruffles. The only change I made was to curve the slightly ‘A’ line shape dress pattern more into my waist. It is a great pattern to suit all body types because of all these options.
This bottle green stretch velvet was perfect for the Issie dress as it drapes and holds it’s shape beautifully and has an elegant sheen that’s so gorgeous in a velvet.
This fabric sewed up easily. I used my overlocker for the seams and then my machine with a stretch needle and walking foot to attach the frills as there are a few layers to get through. I also decided to topstitch the frills down along the shoulder seams so they lay flatter. This is also suggested in the pattern as an option depending on the thickness of your jersey.
This velvet is so wide ( 180cm! ) and was very economical when cutting out my dress. I have enough left to make a bodice, so am thinking of making an Issie top with maybe some chiffon sleeves! Or you could buy a different colour velvet and have different coloured sleeves, ruffles and cuffs– Ooo there’s an idea!
I love a simple make when there’s lots going on at this time of year with family and festivities so this was the perfect pattern to make for me. With some lovely ‘rufflelicious’ details and stunning fabric it makes me feel special.
I love this cotton rich velvet, the quality – a dream to sew, the drape-hangs beautifully, the saturation of colour - a dark olive green and well I just feel special wearing it!
I have chosen to style my Issie with gold for parties, but I am also going to wear it with tights and boots in the day, thereby getting lots of wear and feeling either glamorous or cosy (or both!) through the season.
I hope I have inspired you to make something simply luxurious to wear day or night in this beautiful stretch velvet.
Merry Christmas everyone,
